June 7th Washington, D.C –
Actress and Philanthropist, Taraji P. Henson has recently been blazing a trail of increased mental health awareness within the black community. That trail has led her to Congress where today, she painted the harsh realities that urban youth face daily, and the dire need of an increased focus on mental health within the education system.
Henson has been a reliable leader within the black mental health community having expressed her own struggles with depression. Last year, Henson opened the doors on the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, a group dedicated to serving the mental health needs of the black community. She is steadily chasing her goal of the increased visibility of mental health knowledge within the black community and we are truly thankful for her work. “I think by making it more tangible and putting a face to it is saying it’s okay to not be okay. I’m starting to see more dialogue… and that’s all I ever wanted,” Taraji tells Extra in a recent interview.
