NEW YORK, NY-
Netflix is in negotiation with Marathon Films and RocNation to stream a Nipsey Hussle documentary. The film is directed by Ava Duvernay.
According to Deadline, Netflix is ahead in the bidding war for the piece but that doesn’t mean it’s official. As J-Stone made clear, “no final deal has been inked.” Ava Duvernay is expected to be directing the piece along with Nipsey’s children, Emani and Kross Asghedom.
My personal favorite part of this news? That the family assures fans that the project will not be rushed for ‘monetary gain’.
To Netflix, from a fan.
Please, do not touch this.
The popular streaming platform leads the industry in film streams but it does so by increased shock value. A lot of their pieces become popular due to shock-value or by exploiting a particular issue for ‘monetary gain’.
I.E: The Aaron Hernandez Story. Or, that one where the whole family was sleeping with each other.
This isn’t one of those situations. For many of us, Nipsey Hussle was a hero whose music was just the service of his being. We’re not interested in dirt and quite frankly, I would consider it disrespect if you muddied his story.
Let the family, Ava Duvernay, and RocNation handle the storytelling. We just need somewhere to stream it.
