BALTIMORE, MD –

There’s no easy way to say this; the world is running out of condoms.

As you can imagine, quarantined lovers may have been stocking up on condoms along with their bread and eggs. Well, that’s one small part of the problem. The real issue is that the virus outbreak has caused one of the world’s leading condom producer to shut down.

Malaysia’s Karex BHD is a leading producer for condoms globally. Per Reuters, they produce 1 in 5 condoms globally. Within the last three weeks, the company has not produced a single condom from one of its three Malaysian factories. Even when we get passed this pandemic, it will take some time to get production back and running. “It will take time to jumpstart factories and we will struggle to keep up with demand at half capacity,” Chief Executive Goh Miah Kiat.

The country is on lockdown at least until April 14th. Malyasia is currently a hotbed for the coronavirus and officials are working to decrease the spread. Yes, other countries like China, Thailand, and India are condom producers but they too are also under strict guidelines.

“The good thing is that the demand for condoms is still very strong because like it or not, it’s still an essential to have,” Goh said. “Given that at this point in time people are probably not planning to have children. It’s not the time, with so much uncertainty.”

Family, we’re going to be in the house for quite some time. But, be as smart and safe as you need to be. It’ll be interesting to see how the slowing of condom production affects the world.

Clearly, we have bigger issues but, still.
