WASHINGTON, DC –
President Trump has signed an order that allows the U.S to mine the moon. Yes, that moon.
“Americans should have the right to engage in commercial exploration, recovery, and use of resources in outer space,” the order reads. This is opposite of the 1979 Moon Treaty which described the moon as a “global commons”.
Trump & friends say that the Moon is American.
The order helps the process of establishing a human presence on the moon. Space force officials are aiming to send two astronauts to the moon in 2024 to establish a human presence by 2028. As Complex details, they want to have this presence “on and around the moon”. The order is titled, “Encouraging International Support for the Recovery and Use of Space Resources.”
According to Oil Price, the order states, “outer space is a legally and physically unique domain of human activity and the United States does not view space as a global commons.”
Oh wait, so maybe the moon isn’t American, it’s just American first.
“Americans should have the right to engage in commercial exploration, recovery, and use of resources in outer space,” the order continues.
To infinity and beyond.
Time has shifted and the future we’ve dreamed about is arriving. Part of it is a nightmare and the other part is just unbelievable.
It’ll take a fair dose of time for us to get used to it, but space travel is exciting. Part of me feels weird about doing moon-business before the moon is open for business, but who knows how these dominoes will fall. Hopefully we’ll all be able to enjoy the moon’s possibilities.
I got dibs on a ticket.
