It was a sad moment at Petco Park in San Diego. Just before the Padres took the field, a 40 year old mother and her 2 year old son were killed in a ‘suspicious’ fall.

According to USA Today, the mother and son were pronounced dead at 4:11 PM, about 20 minutes after police were initially called. Homicide Lt. Andrea Brown told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the pair fell from the third level of the stadium, equivalent to a six-story fall. It was apparent that neither had survived the fall, Brown continued.

“Our hearts obviously go out to the family, but also to the people who here could potentially be traumatized who saw this,” Brown said. “It’s a horrible, horrible thing. That’s why we’re giving it a very serious look.”

The serious look.

Police have indicated that it was too early to determine whether the fall was intentional or accidental. Authorities have said that it “appeared to be suspicious”. They’re hoping to get more information from witnesses in the area.

Brown maintains that more information from witnesses could “give the family some peace”.

Padres release a statement.

The San Diego Padres were hosting the Atlanta Braves for some late-season MLB action. Understandably, the game became the last thing on fans’ minds.

The Padres are choosing to defer to police for comments on the tragedy but did release a statement Sunday. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life at Petco Park last evening,” the team said in a written statement Sunday morning. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of those involved. We will continue to refrain from comment on the nature of the incident as it is an ongoing investigation by the San Diego Police Department.”

God bless the family. The father was present in the park, as well.
